Eating, talking on the phone, putting on makeup, shaving with an electric razor, texting, singing, listening to music, drinking coffee. How about this one?
But I have never seen an electric toothbrush at work in this location!
No kidding. And this shot spotted by granddaughter Anna from the back of the van on our way to her Buckeyes swim practice.
One roll would suffice. It was on the list of supplies for this crafty kitsch!
Last week in Pittsburgh, granddaughter Anna saw a pot of flower pens that Aunt Lala made years ago. They are corny but cute and definitely appealed to an 8+ year old.
The old pens still wrote after all those years!!
Anna was fascinated with the pens in the pot and asked if we could make them when I came to Ohio. After a fun trip to the Crafts store for the supplies and brief instructions from Laura, we set up shop. Didn’t even use a full roll of floral tape.
There are rolls and rolls left. We made a pot for her mom, her other grandma, for Aunt Lala, for Anna’s desk and a new one for me which I might take to school again for our sign-in counter. Laura made some for me to take to school years ago, too.

After making them with Anna and looking up instructions, I see people create them as favors and as pens for wedding guest books and such.

When I get home from school I put the kettle on and make a cup of tea. Or a cuppa as some friends say. Unwind.
And I sit at the kitchen table, wait for the water to boil. I saw the fruit bowl reflected in the diner print.
I am sure it has been there before but today I saw it.
Last week I had told an 8th grade student how I appreciated her showing empathy to me.
She smiled.
But then I asked her, do you know what empathy means?
She said she didn’t think she did. Not sympathy. So I wrote it on a piece of paper for her to look up in a dictionary later on as we were downstairs.
Later she brought me this dictionary. She told me empathy wasn’t in it. What? Let me see that.
I took it from her and looked and stared.
She was absolutely right!
It has emotion, but not empathy.
I think empathy is an important quality to possess and needs to be taught as well.
……..meaning she thought I might be in Ohio visiting the family but I said ” I am running errands (returning containers that held delicious cookies for the cookie table) in Swissvale and then across the Monongahela to West Mifflin, dropping something off at Aunt Linda’s…” and she invited me to drop by since I was close to her home in Edgewood. And when I got there, this is what was awaiting my arrival. Two colorful plates of a variety of fruit and some smoked gouda cheese triangles. Mmmmmmm. Lucky me. We got a chance to catch up and exchange a few school stories and relive Laura and James’ wedding weekend. The fruit was refreshing and delicious. It was a relaxing and unexpected treat. Good to have good friends!
Somehow I got the whole congregation in the frame. Maybe I needed a wider lens for so many in a group shot but it didn’t matter. Pastor Karen Garland is seated to the right of front and center. She asked for this shot and everyone gathered together. This is her congregation. They felt the love and squeezed in together, getting rid of the air! I stood on a chair. This is the fifth year I’ve photographed the Zion Apostolic Assembly Christmas Dinner. Tonight it was at the Churchill Country Club. There was a choir, mimes, preaching, gift baskets and a good dinner and dessert. My friend Yvette invites me every year. Their church is in McKeesport. It was a former Catholic church and has a beautiful stained glass window of a saint but the name escapes me for them moment.One time I went there and shot a wedding. They do a lot of good for many. Tutoring, Boys to Men and Girls to Women Youth Programs. It is an honor to be invited to share the evening together and I know they appreciate the photos I shoot.

Tonight I made the pretend bouquet with the shower ribbons. Laura thought they were discarded but they were in a bag at Erika and Mark’s. I tried on my dress and shoes and got a positive response. This outfit is the mail order one I got last week. Tomorrow the rehearsal and bowling pizza sub buffet at the Columbus Athletic Club. Cookies in the back of the car waiting to be delivered to the reception venue on Saturday. Temperature in the 30’s. My sister and brother arrived about ten thirty after a day of travel from Okanogan and New York City and I drive around in circles to pick them up curbside at the airport. So that is the iPhone update. Marlene brought cookies from Hardy Va. We are gathering in to celebrate Laura and James. He’s holding the toasting glasses from my parents used by Mark and Erika at their wedding and the framed legend of the cookie table,borrowed from a teacher friend(thanks Amy ) and ready to grace the actual cookie table at the wedding. Tomorrow morning all these items will be delivered to the Athenaeum. Thanks for all the well wishes and love. I am grateful.
Oh why didn’t I bring the 70-200 lens this weekend? And even if I had, who could have switched it if it were in the camera bag and not on the camera body? Looked out the window to see how the weather was and what a surprise! This hawk was sitting out on top of the swingset and as I slid the glass door open, trying to be so quiet, I was sure he would fly away. I got two shots off and his head moved and he flapped twice and was gone in a flash. Looked up Ohio hawks online and this one seems to be an immature Cooper’s Hawk. He was definitely looking for breakfast. He heard the shutter on the camera, turned his head and was gone.
And that was the planned post for Monday, already set up to go.
Then I get a comment from Joanne in Nebraska (Sunday’s Hot Air Balloons) and a special request for the five lasagnas pic so here they are and a link to the Butternut Squash Lasagna recipe by Giada Di Laurentis, 3rd from the left. We omitted the nutmeg from the Butternut Squash recipe- why? we didn’t have any. Aunt Mary cooked all five with some assembly assistance by Anna and Michael. The lasagnas were accompanied by Garlic Bread and salad and fresh fruit. Here is the ground sausage and meat recipe- omitted the sugar and the fennel seeds from this recipe. The four veg lasagnas were the most popular! Anna wrote labels for each one. Many guests tried a sampler of a few of them. Butternut Squash was a favorite.
Do you remember metal ice cube trays? There was a certain sound of the metal and the hinge. The ice clinking out into a tall glass. You could pinch your skin real easily. That’s what I remember.
This one’s on display at COSI(Center of Science and Industry) in Columbus OH where there is a whole section called PROGRESS. You walk through the different decades of technological and electrical and societal developments.
The kids love to crank the old fashioned telephone and there is a juke box and pinball machine. They are housed in a soda fountain. There’s a horse drawn buggy next to a VW bug. You can look through an antique camera and use a switchboard to connect phone calls. There is a television studio and items from the Space Age.
It is hot and humid here in Pittsburgh.
I was looking for a photo that looked cool. It looks like someone left the freezer open and everything melted.
