Hall of Fame Toys
A few inductees from the list. Every year more toys are nominated and inducted. I asked if there were a Slinky in the house. (No there was not? But they did find….
My grandson Charlie snd his friend and neighbor Cammie were a big help gathering the items for the photo in this post.
A kind of scavenger hunt for some of the toys that are on the list of the Toy Hall of Fame. Yes, there’s an actual museum in Rochester New York. The Strong National Museum of Play states “The National Toy Hall of Fame recognizes toys that have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period. Each year, the hall inducts new honorees and displays examples in the Toy Halls of Fame gallery.”
One of the items is a Cardboard Box.
A bicycle and kite weren’t readily available and there was no Barbie on the premises.

Crafton Public Library a Mini-Tour

And while I was there at the Crafton Public Library, I met Spike.

That’s how I know the game’s name. Saw this display at the Artist and Craftsman store.
IScatter the metal pieces. Throw the little rubber ball up. Quick! Pick up the right number of jacks. Onesies Twosies. Threesies……..hand eye coordination a must. I didn’t purchase the box and try to play. I remember my dad playing jacks with us. Did you ever play Jacks? What name did you call them? Stepping on a stray game piece, when your feet are bare,would be as painful as a piece of Lego.

And you FaceTime, making sure your discard pile can be seen.
It took a few reminders for me from Laura as to whose turn it was, especially when we reversed.

Twisted Things at Target
Hopscotch
Hopscotch. Laura bought sidewalk chalk and I tried to remember how to draw out the squares. Hopping on one foot was tricky for Charlie. The rock Maura chose to throw into a square rarely stayed in the box on one turn, rolling out into unmarked territory. I remember some hopscotch boards painted on asphalt in elementary school but can’t remember seeing kids using them when I had lunch duty years ago. Four square, yes. Hopscotch , no. Do kids play Hopscotch in 2018?
Games Families Play
Do you have boxes of board games in your home? Or have electronics taken precedent?
This week I’m visiting family in Ohio and we’ve been playing board games. Some take hours and hours. The card games aren’t included in this picture but UNO is the most popular around here. Maura and I’ve played a few rounds. I heard the four grandkids were playing Life before Christmas.
Does anyone in your household seek world domination- or scarf up real estate, utilities and railroads, add houses and hotels?
On my mother’s side my Uncle John was very good at chess and my Uncle Robert was good at backgammon and Royalty. Both of their families are good game players. I think my family missed that game playing gene although we had Flinch. I looked up the vintage card game Flinch and it’s pricey on eBay.
Different ages prefer certain games and there are a few games I find difficult to stick with and finish to the win. If I were photographing games at my house you’d see Scrabble and Jenga, Boggle, Pictionary, Mille Bornes and Monopoly.
Good sportsmanship and learning to lose gracefully is an ongoing effort.
Following the rules, taking turns, paying attention are essential ingredients.
The new Risk has been trending at Mark and Erika’s house this week. I’ve been watching Ticket to Ride tutorials on YouTube to teach the grandchildren how to play.
At Laura and James’ house the selection is colorful and fun. Charlie is 2 1/2 so it’s Hi Ho Cherrio! Or these two games photographed by Laura today. The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Game
