Big Chuck’s Market, North Side

We knew there was a story when we saw this market on Chestnut Street. We wondered who Big Chuck was when we saw the sign above the door.

“For decades, Charlie Standfast was an icon of Troy Hill, known in the North Side as a man who took care of his neighbors.” *

The trolley tracks are still visible in the brick street.

Read Big Chuck’s (Charlie Standfast) life story by Jessica Turnbull ( written in 2009) about how he kept this Chestnut Street Market for more than thirty years on the North Side, click the link below

An Unexpected Birthday Gift

My former photography teacher, Germaine Watkins, laser engraved this personal wineglass for my birthday. You might have seen last week’s blog about his Haiti Photographs. He is one of the portraits of the People at Work.

He brought the personalized gift last night to my photography show. He etched fireworks for my July 4th birthday, loops of yarn for my knitting, my name and birthdate and a little cross to represent my being a PK. Sweet. Thanks Germaine. What a nice surprise.

Germaine Watkins show link below and the photo of Haiti’s countryside that I bought which is now hanging in my dining room.

The People at Work Show is a Go

THE PEOPLE AT WORK SHOW IS A GO!

Millvale suffered from the heavy rains and the Main Street looked like a river flowing right through the center of town. The roads were closed Thursday.  Anyone watching the local news, wondered if the opening of my People at Work Show,  scheduled for Saturday 7/7 at 6 PM, could still happen. And the answer is yes. Clean up crews worked feverishly to get the town ready for business.

Hope to see you there for the opening reception Saturday night. Panza Gallery  115 Sedgwick Street Millvale PA.

Regular gallery hours are W TH F 10-5 Sat 10-3

You’ve seen some people at work on the blog already.

Vintage Eyeglasses at Neighborhood Flea

Sunday July 8 10-4. 26th and Smallman Street. A. Boss Opticians of Braddock will have a booth of vintage eyeglasses for sale.

They are about the only establishment who will install replacement lenses in vintage eyeglasses.

The flea market will have lots more vintage items besides eyeglasses.

I learned this today when I picked up my new reading and computer glasses. Mr. Boss brought out some samples and I photographed them.

Grateful for Birthdays

Grateful for birthdays. It was a happy but quiet celebration. Glad my sister is here. More family coming in soon. It was a relaxing day.

Steve, Mary and I took a walk around the Highland Park Reservoir after supper. We got drenched when a sudden thunderstorm appeared just after I took these photos of the peaceful water.

Our power has been out a few hours now. Heard a tree is down on Highland Avenue. Wires down. Hope it can be fixed soon.

Yes, it’s the moon AND fireworks

Yes, it’s the moon AND fireworks at the same time. Columbus Ohio with the family last week for the gigantic fireworks display. We had a nice evening together.

it’s the annual effort to improve my fireworks photography.

And I am celebrating another year with my Fourth of July birthday today.

Happy Birthday to me.
