A bolt of lightning knocked out the internet so blogging from my phone
Rhubarb says Spring to me.
When the three kids were younger, we’d pile in the car and drive 7 hours to New York City to visit my sister. I’d park in the lot by the pier on the Hudson and we’d make our way up the five floor walk-up to her apartment. Everyone would be asleep on the floor camping out and in the early morning, Aunt Mary would walk to Zito’s Bakery on Bleecker Street, come home with warm loaves. She’d have the butter out and a jar of her homemade strawberry rhubarb preserves. She’d slice the bread on a wooden board. That’s what the kids woke up to – warm bread and butter and strawberry rhubarb preserves-
Berenice Abbott took this photo of Zito’s in 1937.
Today I went to the Farmer’s market on the South Side and bought two bunches of rhubarb and fresh picked strawberries. I was trying to remember the method and chopped the stalks in one inch pieces, put them into a large enamel kettle and sprinkled with sugar to sit.

Added the strawberries and cooked it down. I wish it wasn’t so late and I could have called for the recipe. Just did it from memory.
The loaf from the Farmers Market on the bread board, a gift from my sister.

Postcard stamp on the back of Zito’s card a dime. I pulled it out of the frame tonight. Read what you wrote.
Before Matthew was born and he’s 33!
Kids grown up and gone but tonight as I taste the strawberry rhubarb preserves, I remember.
P.S. And to answer your question Mary, on the card-
I did get that assistantship and that’s how I was able to get hired at Pittsburgh Public Schools in 1989!
P.P.S. Zito’s is gone now.

What is a Vactor truck?, I had to ask.
Another man on the sidewalk said, “Haven’t you ever seen a vacuum cleaner before?”
(Not exactly an ElectroLux), Mary said to me.
It was night in the West Village near Bleecker and West 10th. What a nice guy. I can’t tell you his name which is too bad. He said, “sure you can take my picture.” when I asked.
He explained how the other truck had a camera they could look down into the pipes drains and sewer.
Corey is filming his cousin Michael and his brother Justin is resting up for his ride. Watched this effort for awhile. They used to skateboard. I talked to them and asked if I could put them on the blog.
And now it is Justin’s turn

Good thing it isn’t the Sunday Times
French Tourists Outside The Magnolia Bakery
I really wanted to photograph the line outside the bakery. When we went there on Saturday evening there were customers but no line.
My sister loves me a lot. She walked with me up Bleecker Street after our outing to Brooklyn.
I was able to photograph the line.
Tourists from Japan on Sunday Afternoon – they found the reference in a guide book
Here is the line at the Magnolia Bakery. Often photographed and talked about. My sister found a site online with 282 photographs of Magnolia Bakery products. Guess I was a little late with my desire to take this photo. But I did it anyway.
Earlier in the day we walked through Chinatown on Mott Street
Mary and I ate these delicious Hot Cross Buns from Rocco’s Pasticceria after we rode Jane’s Carousel (part of tomorrow’s post)
Cupcakes in the Angelique Cafe Food Cart

Another urban shot from last week in NYC. I was walking by this scene and had to photograph it.
It’s a cash only, no slices, no reservations, coal oven pizza place but I won’t add their name cause I am sure this is not their best look. The restaurant grading system is prominently displayed in every window in the city.
And if you liked my Positivity Helps shot from the Urban Challenge, the challenge creator, Terence S. Jones, has added it to his collection of urban images. You can go onto his blog here and click the heart button on the photo. Thanks.

Pasticceria Rocco. 243 Bleecker Street. When Mary and I had our hot cross buns and cappuccino, this nice young man gave me a detailed tour of the pastries in all the glass cases. He knew I was from out of town. When we returned the next evening he was there and I asked if I might take his photo. He reached for the loaves (Egg Bread and Panettone) and was an enthusiastic subject. Friday, the devout are fasting and not considering eating the delicious breads until Sunday but you should have seen the Egg Cookies being wrapped up in white boxes and tied with string, flying out of the place! The Struffoli looked enticing, too.
