No Longer Standing
You might remember my August 2022 post of Dead Trees Standing Although there were three photos in the post, one tree was in Columbus. I noticed that the two dead trees in the park across the street are no longer there. They must have taken them down while I was out of town as I surely would have heard the operation.

Ice Cream Truck on a Summer Afternoon
Maura and I went to Staples today and the man in front of us was getting signs laminated for his business- AN ICE CREAM TRUCK. I am nostalgic for the ice cream trucks of my childhood. We discovered he would be in our neighborhood later after lunch so Maura and I went by the Highland Park Pool and saw some campers lining up to order cool treats. When I met him in the morning, I’d asked if it would be okay to photograph him as part of the ongoing People at Work series and he agreed.
A minimum order of $20 and he will bring his truck to your game, fundraiser, company picnic, birthday party, sporting event, church socia or family reunion. You name it. He sponsors a lot of East End sports teams, too.
Maura had the water ice, cherry flavor and I had a classic ice cream sandwich. Perfect for a summer afternoon. As we left to get into our car Maura said it was great he didn’t play annoying music!
Meet the Youngblood family. James, Eric and Ziarrah. James told me he has been in the ice cream business for six years now. He became self employed as he was having difficulty finding a job so put everything he had, plus a loan of a thousand, into purchasing the truck. I asked him what he does in the winter, Deep Fried Cornish Hens! On a FoodTruck.

Another Color Photo Appears Black and White
When the outdoor world seems black and white and gray but your photograph is in color. Everyone has had enough of the cold, snow, ice and dark. They’re ready for crocuses and daffodils bursting through the earth, looking for light.
I’ve photographed this tree before. I always like how the snow defines the branches.

A Mile Around the Perimeter and a Pair of Elephants on Top the Fountain
My friend G, visiting this weekend, spoke of a fountain with two elephants in a park near Short North in Columbus. Goodale Park, surrounded by Victorian Village.
I’d never seen the fountain or the park and so after breakfast , I asked my daughter if she knew of the park with the two elephants. Sounded like a good blog post to me. (Thanks, G)
Not only did she know how to drive to Goodale Park, she said, “James and I had our engagement photographs taken here”
AND
when we got there and were reading the memorial plaque for Dr. Lincoln Goodale, the first doctor to live in Columbus who founded Trinity Episcopal Church downtown where she and James were married almost 3 years ago.
Laura and I had a had a lovely time walking through the park and she told me that the perimeter is a mile around.
The last Sunday of summer was a perfect day.

A tall tree-
My father was really good at identifying trees, knowing their proper names, looking at the leaf shapes, the bark.
How I wish I’d paid better attention when I was young.
The park is noted for its wonderful and varied tree collection
We saw Catalpa Beans but don’t eat them!
and the asters were my mother’s favorites. I was glad to be able to tell Laura that as she held the asters so they didn’t blow around in the strong wind. (Aster is the name of the colorway of wool I am knitting Laura’s cowl)

Polish Hill Skateboard Spot
When I saw what I thought was a wading pool filled with graffiti, I thought I’d return another day and photograph it.
Sunday after coffee, Steve and I drove over to the park in Polish HIll and as I walked closer, I realized it was NOT a wading pool that was decorated with urban art but a place for kids to skateboard.
Here’s a list of skateboarding terms and info about the physics of it but not sure if I am properly labeling this pit a half- pipe or not.
Alas, not a skateboarder in sight on Sunday morning so no action shots.
