City Snow

Right after a snow storm, the trees branches are outlined, city sounds are muffled and as the snowfall accumulates, everything looks clean and beautiful.

Time passes and the pretty snow doesn’t look so pristine.

Parking lots have piles of dirty snow where the plows have cleared the snow

Oatmeal. Yes or no?

Breakfast Thursday. I cooked this oatmeal on the stovetop for five minutes. . Do you like to eat oatmeal?

How Old is Your Spice?

Thinking about the spice jars on the shelf.

Where do you keep yours? A spice rack, a drawer, a cupboard?

How old is your spice? That’s the question.

I received a gift of a jar of Bagel-on-Grant spices at Christmas (thank you Amy) and as I put it on my spice shelf today, I looked at the other little jars and thought about how long they’ve been on the shelf.

Some spices are used often, so get replenished more often but some little jars just sit. A pinch or smidge here or there, but just sitting. For years!

I think it’s time to clean out the spice collection.

The new one is the fresh looking white label in the photo. The Steel City Salt Company is across the Allegheny River in Millvale, Pennsylvania. I just checked out their website and they are on a family vacation until February 3rd but they’ll fill online orders upon their return.

Here’s an article from Still Tasty about the shelf life of spices

Bagel-on-Grant seasoning is the new spice.
The jar of cardamom was new before a Christmas.

As predicted, more to come

First snow post you saw the view from the back.
This is the view from the front.

Good soup, hot tea and knitting weather. Not good if you have to be out on the road.

Purple Things July 2012

Rainbow Jello made in layers in a Bundt pan.

Reblogged from July 2012 there used to be weekly word challenges. If you’ve followed me for a time you may remember these images.

I enjoyed participating, coming up with photos to match the word of the week.

July 2012-

What I discovered is I shoot a lot of red.

I blurred my eyes to spot purple in the archives.

Yes, I  made the rainbow jello to photograph.  It took 5 hours. I got the recipe from my daughter Laura who found it on the web here

The one pictured is not spiked and no one ate it either.  It is still in my freezer to slice and photograph with light coming through the jello like stained glass.

Purple views, white balance setting askew but it works for the challenge.

A compendium of purple.

Howl at the Moon on Seventh

Too early for nightlife

Right next door to the Rabbit Art installation. The lights and colors caught my eye.

Giant Rabbit Art

Rabbit Art in Downtown Pittsburgh.

When Steve came home from work we drove down to 8th and Penn Avenue to see the fifty-foot inflatable rabbit, part of the Intrude Installation . It wasn’t there!

We found the three smaller Rabbits on 7th Avenue. A person protecting the display was able to tell me why the fifty-foot rabbit wasn’t to be found. I discovered they check the wind and so the fifty- foot rabbit had been deflated to keep it safe.

Here are the rabbits I did see. by Australian Artist Amanda Parer
