Fire Hydrant

Mueller still manufactures fire hydrants. They were founded in 1857. You can read about the company here

Did you know how far down they go under the ground? I looked them up and discovered a fire hydrant has a lot of parts. This one had Chattanooga Tennessee on it.

Found on Laura and James’ Street in Ohio. Where are your fire hydrants from?

When we were kids I remember my parents prompting us to observe and consider what we saw around us. The details. Like the name on the paper towel holder in a rest room. A sugar packet on a restaurant table. A label. Look for information you didn’t know before. Think about where it was made.

I’ll admit I’ve not thought much about fire hydrants before. I know not to park within 15 feet. Dogs favor them. I was surprised how far down into the ground they go. We see just the top. Reassuring to know they are there at the ready but hope to not need use of one.

A screen shot of their catalog in case you need to order.

How Do You Feel About Doughnuts?

Although I don’t think of myself as a “doughnut person”, this doughnut has to be the most delicious one I’ve eaten in my adult life.

A friend brought it over for me. Right now they are take-out only. Made in Bloomfield at Bitter Ends Garden Luncheonette on Liberty Avenue. “Find our doughnuts with THYME MACHINE Wed-Fri 8am-NOON out front of our shop!”

Yeasty, fresh and delicious.

Baseball Team of Yesteryear

My paternal grandfather Floyd M. Hendricks born in 1892 in Pawnee, Illinois, is seated on the right with the line drawn to him. I see baseball gloves. They look to be a serious group of men.

Liquid or Bar?

Soap. We use a lot of it, especially these last couple of years. Do you sing Happy Birthday every time?

According to an article in Healthy ““Whether soap comes in a bar or in a liquid form, they are both equally effective at reducing pathogens and removing dirt,” says Rachel Burns, MD, a dermatologist in Edina, Minnesota…”

Liquid or bar? What’s your preference?
Scented or unscented? Hand washing or showering/bathing make a difference in your selection?
Fragrant Soap from New Zealand sent by Woolswapper -thank you Catherine
Fancy soap from Florida, thank you Joanne .
Thank you Carrie for the lovely bars you sent from Maine. And the handknit washcloths are great!

Just thinking about soap today. I wanted to show a tiny wrapped bar of motel soap but couldn’t put my hands on one tonight. A year ago I posted about bars of Fels-Naptha soap but that’s another post.

Supporting Small Business

In a January post I asked how old is your spice?

The gift of a new jar of Bagel-on-Grant Seasoning gave me the idea for the post and this chain of events happened (thank you Amy of McWalker Yarns, a neighbor of Steel City Salt Company in Millvale PA)

I photographed the new jar of seasoning because it was so clean and fresh looking compared to the other spices on my spice rack. Made me think how old are some of these jars of spice?

Included the link of Steel City Salt Company in the post and a blog follower saw the post and the link. Then they mail ordered these products in the photo below. I received the photo yesterday and was glad to know small business was supported from someone having read the blog

The blog follower even wrote an email to Steel Salt Salt Company telling how reading the blog promoted this order. And they are very satisfied !

Thanks for sending me the photo of your order from Steel City Salt Company
Here’s the top of my jar of Bagel-on-Grant Seasoning

Uncle Harold Played the Tuba

Uncle Harold “Butch” Hendricks, born in 1928, is shown here with a tuba. My father’s youngest brother, seventeen years apart.

No date on the photo – my guess is about 11 years old so approximately 1939? Illinois just heard from a music reacher friend and Pat says “I think Uncle Harold might have been 14 or 15. He is managing to hold that tuba up and they are heavy.”
