Up a Tree

How fortunate my neighbors scheduled their trees to be trimmed,

The branches were growing into the side of their house.

After Steve moved the cars out of the garage and onto the street, I thought to myself- “hmmmm- People at Work, right in my driveway!” Perfect for an interesting photo shoot. Andrew agreed to allow me to photograph him working. You should see those spikes that help him climb up the tree. Takes a lot of skill and care. You have to know what you are doing. Ascend is the word of the week, showing upward movement.

Meet Tina Piña Trachtenburg, street performance artist and animal advocate.

Laura and I walked down to Union Square to the Holiday Market. It would have been hard to maneuver the popular market on a Saturday afternoon even without the stroller. What a crowd! The weather felt like a warm Spring day.

At the entrance point, we saw this flock of pigeons on the steps and I placed a bill in the open suitcase and asked to photograph the creator of the felt birds. Then I asked if I might blog her photo and she agreed. She directed me to the bright green fact sheet under the donations.

House Call

We wanted to sew a dinosaur hoodie for Charlie. The sewing machine stopped sewing on my last visit.

Googled and found Sewing Machine Repair-Columbus OH in your home.

Steve arrived in less than an hour. Fixed the broken bobbin case and bracket, added a ballpoint needle and gave my daughter and me a tutorial on what went wrong. And how to maintain it. Sews like a dream and no lugging it to a shop or waiting.

Pittsburgh River Rescue

Fortunately it’s a timed challenge practice drill and not a real rescue situation on the Ohio River yesterday. These men and women do important and difficult work.

I’d taken two grandkids to the Carnegie Science Center and we had just toured the submarine docked behind the Center.

Watching the diver dive into the river while tethered to the rope as it unfurled, was something to see. Another diver waited on deck, ready to help if diver one got into trouble.

You have to be a paramedic first before any further training can begin. The instructor was patient and answered all Jack’s questions.

The City Responds

The mayor has a Response Center set up and you can call 311 and complain or report a situation that needs attention.

I’ve called about excessive litter at the base of the Duquesne Incline, a hornet nest on a city tree , a streetlight was out and needed to be replaced and last week I called about stop sign on Larimer Avenue that was blocked by tree branches snd it couldn’t be seen.

This morning I was driving to Zeke’s get coffee grounds for my house guests and look who was working hard to rectify the very problem I reported!

Here’s Chuck Wise again, manning the controls of the Duquesne Incline. He’s been operating the incline for twenty years. During the day he delivers flowers. He ‘graciously allowed me to photograph him again and you can tell there was a Pirates Game Wednesday night.

Meet Slaven Lunar Kosanović

Meet Slaven Lunar Kosanović.

You may have seen his artwork in Forbes Magazine or Playboy but didn’t know it! or click his name and see his walls, canvases and illustrations

We ran into him at an artist’s evening at the Croatian Design Superstore in Zagreb last week. My son introduced us.

He’s holding a book created for a humanitarian effort, restoring a church fresco. (Reminder to self; always carry notebook and writing implement to record important/accurate details)

I found the text “The book ‘Adris Foundation – contribution to Croatian society since 2007’ presents funded projects – each project is described and illustrated by one of 26 illustrators. The ‘Danse macabre’ fresco by Vincent of Kastav from 1474 has always simultaneously fascinated and dreaded me so it was a logical choice for me. Project name: Laboratory examination and protection of the Beram frescos / Project bearer: Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, Project leader: Dr. Sc Emina Pustijanac”

Wisdom and Love at Ritter’s Diner

Meet Sophia and Aphrodite.

Last week I made arrangements to photograph Aphrodite for the People at Work Series. Steve and I’ve known Aphrodite for more than 23 years now. Sophia asked me if I knew what Sophia meant and I had to admit I didn’t.

But I do now! Wisdom. And Aphrodite means Love.

I ordered two eggs over medium, dry wheat toast with butter on the side and potatoes with the well done crispy bits. Coffee and a glass of water.

I asked Sophia if I might photograph her, too, and she graciously agreed. I forgot to ask Sophia how long she’s worked at Ritter’s Diner but I know Aphrodite has worked there for 39 years!

Chances are if you’re from Pittsburgh, you’ve had the good fortune to meet both of these wonderful women.

Celebrating Life as a Clay Artist

Meet Bernie Pintar.

Today I went to see him in the Sculpture Studio in the basement of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

He graciously agreed to be in my People at Work Series.

Originally from East Pittsburgh, he’s a 1972 graduate of the Ivy School of Professional Art which was a six story building in downtown Pittsburgh Market Square ( no longer there)- I looked it up and saw that Artist Activist Keith Haring went there, too.

And here is the amazing part of Bernie’s story- He started in clay in 2009. WOW!

So here is how Bernie packages his stunning ceramic artwork-

he has “nests” for them and see where it says HEAD? He learned how to package his artwork like the Television Repairman who used to come fix his mother’s Zenith- Frank G. smelled like mothballs he remembers

He’d come with a box and say “I have the tube for your set.” and it was in a box with handles, just the way Bernie now makes his carriers. That’s where he learned that method. Frank G the TV repairman.
