Today was the day to get moving. The skies threatened rain so it would have been so easy to cancel and stay home. I even emailed to ask” is the walk happening rain or shine?” Turns out they are committed and walk in the rain.

I decided I’d better go walk after telling everyone I was going to take a walk through this historic Allegheny Cemetery sponsored and led by Fitness Instructor Nancy of the Stephen Foster Community (senior) Center.

Now there were two speed walkers who left the other four of us in the dust. Experienced walkers for sure. How I made it 3.5 miles is amazing. It’s happening again next Tuesday, too. Hmmmmmm

The Speed walkers like pinpoints as they pulled away from the pack.

There were three Fox dens you can see on this little hillside. The seasoned walkers have seen their heads peeking out of the holes.

The Persistence of Maple Seeds

You know the seeds I’m referring to- the ones like helicopters that twirl in the wind or if you peel the end you can stick it on the end of your nose.That is if the seed isn’t too dry already. There’s a bit of “sticky” to adhere to your skin. My grandson likes to pick them up off the sidewalk and hold them high, let them go and like a rotor they go round and round to the ground. The maple seeds are all over the city this time of year.

Last week on our walk around the neighborhood, we saw a lot of the seeds and quite a few tiny maple trees. I told Charlie that wherever a seed lands in some dirt, it has a chance to grow into a tree. I find these “volunteer” trees in my pachysandra ground cover and in other unexpected spots. You have to pull them up and out before they get too deep. And of course volunteer trees pop up from acorns and other seeds. Right now I have a grove of young ailanthus trees in my back garden..And if you want to purposefully plant a maple tree from seed, click here for instructions.

Evening Stroll in Reykjavik

Back home in Pittsburgh now but here’s an evening stroll from my hotel to the old city center in Reykjavik last week. Laugavegur was the street. It got dark on my way back. You can see the sea at the end of a couple of the streets. Open candles in windows were inviting

Icelandic Bride

Although I’m back home in Pittsburgh, I saw this elegant bride in Reykavik on Saturday night. I’d just taken a photo of a dress in a window and walked while becoming wet in the sleeting cold rain. Just felt magical to see her. I hope she doesn’t mind .

Grateful for Birthdays

Grateful for birthdays. It was a happy but quiet celebration. Glad my sister is here. More family coming in soon. It was a relaxing day.

Steve, Mary and I took a walk around the Highland Park Reservoir after supper. We got drenched when a sudden thunderstorm appeared just after I took these photos of the peaceful water.

Our power has been out a few hours now. Heard a tree is down on Highland Avenue. Wires down. Hope it can be fixed soon.

Late Afternoon Walk in the Sun

We took a late afternoon walk in the sun today. Penny was excited to take a walk. Maura found a book in the Little Free Library on the corner.

Charlie wore his ski goggles. He held up his baby to show him the fully visible moon.

We cut down the alley and saw some signs of bulbs sprouting through the earth. Charlie looked back to make sure I was coming, too. I was gawking and shooting a few snaps on the phone, capturing the sun we haven’t seen in such a long time. It was chilly in the shade.

We’ve still got to get through the month of March and it’s been known to snow but I could feel a respite from winter today.
