thanks to Cheri Lucas Rowlands for this fun challenge. You were right about a lot of possibilities.

Cotton Candy Man

This was taken at PNC Park last August at a Pirates Game.   People at Work is an ongoing project for me and this is one from the archives.

The WordPress Weekly Challenge didn’t appear in my email today so am thinking of a word to go with this image.  Any suggestions?

Not that one should consume any of this cotton candy confection, but I liked the photograph.

Wonder how heavy it is to carry that palette of cotton candy, so high in the air.

Found an article from Chicago- Behind-the Scenes Ballpark Jobs by Debra Auerbach which discusses food vendors and concessions. And Cotton Candy originated “at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair” says Kitchen Daily Blog where there’s a recipe.

Mt. Vernon Photo Find

I was sifting through old photographs on one of the snow days. You know those awful albums with the adhesive on the pages to stick the photos to the page?

Found this shot I took (film) of my son Mark (he’ll be 38 in May) and noticed the random dad taking a family photograph.

P.S. Update of post
Mark saw the photo of himself and emailed this photo that he took of his kids at Mt. Vernon just this past year

Making Good Use of the Grapefruit Knife

The last of the Christmas gifts of fruit.

Starting the day off with refreshing citrus-  Ruby Red Grapefruit from Texas.

I don’t use it often, but dug out the old grapefruit knife to loosen the sections. The best part is squeezing all the juice into the spoon at the end.

Slurp!

You Could Dress Me Up…..1959- Newark NJ

Note to self:    Remember how I mugged for the camera in 1959 when I’m attempting to photograph the grandchildren in 2014!

Pittsburgh Public Schools was closed today.  I did some sorting and found some old family photos.  My family didn’t own a camera that I know of but I think my sister took this photo somehow and I will ask her tomorrow and add any details. My cousins may have been involved.  Paul? John B?

An iPhone photo of a photo isn’t the best quality but you get the idea.

Look What Jack Finally Lost! via his Mom and Dad

Erika sent me these two pictures of Jack  this evening.  She said that Jack gave me permission to blog them!

His front tooth was hanging on by a thread for the longest time and Jack kept wiggling it all Christmas break.  You kept thinking it would come out but even when he’d twist it, it didn’t!

It gave you the shudders, right down your spine, watching him manipulate it. I thought I’d witness it coming out in person but didn’t happen.  Until tonight!  A milestone.

Sure gives a different smile!   Thanks Erika and Mark. He looks pretty excited about it’s coming out.

Thanks to my former colleague Jane McK – the one who initially shared a link about this project.

The 1000 donor mark was reached this afternoon.

The clock is ticking down but pledges have increased as of today.  People want to be a part of something positive.  Although my pledge was modest, I thought that blogging about the incredible effort being made would be another way to contribute.

I received a message from the KICKSTARTER update about using whatever networks you have to get the word out.  I’d posted the request on FB a couple of times.  Then I thought, BLOG IT!

I know even blog readers in South Africa, Australia, the UK and  Croatia will cheer Chef Sousa on in spirit and hope his goal is reached by midnight tomorrow night.   No bank will lend the money necessary due to the location!

Trying to reach the $250,000 goal for the

Superior Motors: Community Restaurant & Farm Ecosystem

and getting close.  There’s a deadline!  11:59 PM Monday January 6th

It will mean a lot to the Braddock community to have Chef Kevin Sousa’s restaurant supported and launched.

What Kevin posted earlier this afternoon

“We are humbled and proud to announce the support of Rob Stephany of The Heinz Endowments who has graciously committed $40,000 towards the job training facet of Superior Motors if we are able to reach our fundraising goal of $250,000. Therefore, if successful, we would have nearly $300,000 to put towards the project with an extra $40,000 committed expressly to training young people to work in the culinary arts.

“Rob is a living, working legend in economic development. To have his support is beyond humbling. Kevin and I are incredibly honored and grateful.” – Mayor John Fetterman

Superior Motors also recently secured a prominent mention in one of the premier food publications in the nation, Food & Wine Magazine.”  click Build a Restaurant Revive a Town

A Century of Crossword Puzzles and a Guest Blog Photo

You might have noticed a recent GOOGLE DOODLE with a crossword puzzle.  Crosswords have been in the news a lot lately. I hear they’re good for your brain, keep it sharp.

I’d read an article in the Washington Post  by Merl Reagle about the inventor of the first crossword puzzle -Arthur Wynne, who ” never received a penny” for his creation.  His first puzzle was printed on December 21, 1913.

I have several friends and family who enjoy solving crosswords. In some households there’s a race to get the newspaper first!

And if you haven’t seen the movie WORDPLAY, consider watching it. There’s a trailer for the 2006 film in this link from TIME.

When I was visiting the family in Ohio, their newspaper- Columbus Dispatch– had a giant puzzle created by Monica Zurowski (managing editor of the Calgary Herald)  and I mailed it to my friend Bill who is a crossword  aficionado.  Today he messaged me a photo of the puzzle after he solved it.

He does crosswords everyday and does them well.  He says according to the film, WORDPLAY,  this puzzle in the photograph is not the definition of a true crossword puzzle but Bill said it was interesting and took a long time to accomplish ( today was an unexpected snow day from school)

Thanks Bill for the photo and good info on crossword puzzles.              I’ve seen you do them in ink!

Star Wars Lego® Figures Photo Found on my Phone

Either Michael or Jack, one of my grandsons, took this photo of Star Wars figures..  I found it in my December Photo Stream in Aperture tonight.

I hadn’t seen it before, didn’t notice it.  I know I didn’t take it.  The kids love to use the electronic devices.

Any it was all set up and photographed (on the piano I’m fairly certain) and here’s their shot.  Guest  blog photo by one of them.

I’d left the mini Light Sabers in a gift box with a friend’s gift but she mailed them out from Pittsburgh in a card so they got to Ohio in time for Christmas.  Need light sabers  to do battle!!  Thanks V.

Something about mini figures invites creative and imaginative play.
