Guest blog by our host Dave E who was finishing a roof he was putting on- why did the moose cross the road? To be with his family.
we were just told on our wilderness tour that moose don’t congregate. Well here are four of them together. A bull (dad) cow (mom) and two calves (kids)
Our friends drove us down to the beach on the Spit.
No ones spirit was dampened by the rain.
Earlier people had clipped notes and intentions to the woven basket. There were some fireworks that illuminated the sky, sh0t out from the basket.
“2004 Mavis began the Burning Basket Project as an experience of interactive, impermanent art. Gathered from her background in creating baskets and woven with the desire to engage the public in a unique, living art form, Mavis has facilitated burning baskets in many communities. The large, intricate basket is given as a gft to the people, infused with decoration and spirit by willing participants, and finally burned, dramatically and upwardly releasing positive messages and heartfelt sentiments.”- From the artist’s website
Two different short videos (with the same name) A jumpy little phone video I shot during the Burning Basket ceremony and after the basket their were individuals who lit hula hoops and twirled fire around
Today Jaclyn and her sister Shannon baked nut rolls together, carrying on family tradition.
Their mother, Theresa, passed last February. This post is to remember Theresa , those who knew and loved her and to send hugs to Jaclyn and Shannon as they are missing their mom, especially at Christmas time.
Theresa was one of the four sisters in this slideshow (baking the pizelles) showing the three sisters making nutroll in Pittsburgh- Linda, Georgeann and Theresa, while the fourth sister Marlene communicated via SKYPE in Virginia.
This afternoon my friend Ann taught me how to knit a sock on two circular needles. As we knit, we drank some unusual organic herbal coffee (from a tea bag, no coffee beans involved) with a drop of almond milk.
Using two circular needles took time to get the hang of it. When I got home, I watched a video by Cat Bordhi on YouTube as a follow up. It’s good to learn new things.
So the double pointed needles are taking a break. I’m thinking about knitted gifts, wondering why I didn’t start in July- there’s not a lot of time before the holidays. We all know the family is eager to see what grandma has knit this year. Ha!
As I left Ann’s porch, I saw this stunning rose in a lovely light. Ann saw me stop on the steps and I called through the glass – “I’m photographing your rose!”
Thanks Ann. For the knitting instruction and your beautiful rose- almost November.
My sister took me there for lunch on Thursday. We shared a hot pastrami on rye with both fresh and pickled pickles. I’d never been to Katz’s before but would definitely go again. Everyone gets a ticket upon entering. You have to show it when you leave and pay, even if it is blank like mine was as Mary treated.
I sat at the table while she got in line for the carver to carve the meat. I can tell you the sandwich was delicious. as were the accompanying pickles.
A huge menu and lots more to order but half a sandwich was plenty. A nice woman let me photograph her matzoh ball but I didn’t think the photo looked good enough to post.
It was MIXED BAG (vinyl) in my dorm room in the early seventies. Over and over.Richie Havenssang Dylan better than Bob.
Here’s an email in response to the one I wrote in December.
Subject: A Message of Gratitude
Last Christmas Matthew was back from Croatia and we were sitting in Mark and Erika’s living room in Ohio, remembering the first Richie Havens concert I forced him to go to as a teenager. We saw him together years later in New York City at the Knitting Factory, too. Matthew and Aunt Mary braved a Connecticut snowstorm to see him together and sat right under him.

Hi Ruth
Thank you so much for taking the time to send along such kind thoughts. I will make sure Richie sees your email.
Best wishes for 2013!

Subject: Message of Gratitude
This is a message for Mr. Havens as I sit with my 32 yo son tonight (home from
Croatia where he lives) listening together to RH on youtube.
When Matthew was 14 I forced him to go listen to a Richie Havens concert in
Pittsburgh Pa at the Carnegie Music Hall.
Oh he was mad cause who wants to go anywhere with their mother at that point of
their life?
We waited in the corridor afterwards and met Mr. Havens and my son said he emanated
positive energy right out of himself into him.
Matthew saw him in concert at least six times after that and he said tonight
that Richie Havens was able to communicate to his soul. We saw him together at
the Knitting Factory years later.
So powerful and I wanted to express gratitude for his musical gifts and these
wonderful loving memories we share of listening to Mr Havens music and energy.

Richie Havens RIP. Matthew and I spoke on SKYPE last night when we heard of your passing and we will always remember you and your music which touched our souls, deeply.
The wordpress weekly photo challenge is Silhouette. When I hear that word I think of the little black paper cut- outs of children’s profiles mounted in a black oval frame. They used to be popular and hanging in homes. But yesterday I was photographing this display of bras created for October- Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The wind was brisk and it started to rain. The bras hung on a metal tree sculpture at American Eagle campuson the South Side, Pittsburgh, were blowing like flags. This photo is unretouched and is in color but looks black and white without any adjustments.
While in the middle of a friend’s photo shoot of vintage clothing, her mother’s long haired dachshund started following my watch reflection and chased it all around. I’ve never seen a dog exhibit this behavior. Trying to capture it was spontaneous and difficult as the watch was on my left wrist and the camera in my right hand. No chance to focus. It was just happening. Stop action seemed the best way to try and show the motion. Min Pin Tigger makes a cameo appearance.Wish I had a real video to show it better.
A new manual pencil sharpener and left-handed Anna hard at work sharpening every pencil she could find. I thought of the pencils at home that need some new points to write lists, notes and phone numbers. She needed a sharp pencil to complete her homework. Mary suggested the manual as the electric ones break easily or host a crayon. Nothing like a new can of sharpened pencils to represent possibility.
