The Stripes Looked Brown to Me

I never saw a zebra this close before. A relative to the horse and donkey. Love that mane!

These photos were taken last Friday at the Food Revolution Day, Pittsburgh.

Zebra foals are supposed to be brown and cream at birth according to what I could google. Depends on the breed.

The hair might be brown but the skin is black underneath?

This one didn’t look that young to me.

But I was so surprised to see the brown color in the light.

Stone Manor in Middletown Maryland Setting for a Super Wedding

If you follow the blog for a time, you notice my friend,  the top commenter, Sue Reinfeld.

Her daughter was married in a beautiful ceremony Sunday afternoon at Stone Manor in  Middletown ,  Maryland.

Steve and I were  glad we could share in the happy celebration. We left for home (Pittsburgh) as the sun was setting.

After Midnight at the Andy Warhol Museum 20 Year Gala

The $500 a plate crowd started at 6PM but after midnight it was fair game for the public.  Steve and I went to the opening of the Andy Warhol Museum twenty years ago, remembered a line around the block, waiting.  A bar across the street which is no longer there, where Eddie and Christine put on the finishing touches of his outfit and hair for the parade.  Christine used to cut our hair in the Fulton Buiding, long before it was Heaven and now the Renaissance Hotel.

Where did twenty years go?

So we thought we’d slip down and check it out.  See what the beautiful people are up to in the Burgh Saturday night.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Work of Art

Last Monday night at the Art for Change auction I bid and won a very cool work of art by photographer Scott Roller-

this is what I see when I come out of an upstairs room now.

Subway Face.  A poster  in the subway, peeling off the wall.

It is a compelling gaze.  Not sure who it was to begin with but you keep looking at it and wonder.

The deteriorated shape of the poster really adds to the mood and make it original.  Click on Scott’s name and see his 66 Shots series from a trip on Route 66.

He prints, mats and frames his photographs.  Works of art!

A work of art!      She wrote his name on it.  A chocolate pound cake- (gluten free) with vanilla buttercream icing.   Thanks to Aunt Mary for helping piece adequate parchment paper into the cross shaped pan so there were no cracks when it was extricated from the pan.

Food Revolution Day Pittsburgh

Fortunately, I ran into a former colleague and her daughter and they were able to explain what was happening at the field at Obama Academy this afternoon when I was driving home from school. Food Revolution Day!   In conjunction with Jamie Oliver, the third annual Food Revolution Day was taking place all over the globe today.

I took home an organic purple pepper plant for my neighbor to plant in his garden.

“I Dug Up the Iris” by Guest Poet Liane Ellison Norman- on Dorothy’s Birthday

“I Dug Up the Iris” by Guest Poet Liane Ellison Norman

I Dug Up the Iris

in Dorothy’s garden
to plant in the soaked

soil of mine, memorial
to her each spring

when they’ll open
complicated ruffles

and flourishes, purple
or blue with speckled

throats. They’ll rise
out of rhizomes

sprawling at soil’s
surface like the joints

of my old  hands
anchoring the tall

stalks and frilly petals.
This morning

in the brief breath
of cool I dug shallow

trenches for this legacy,
this pantry of pollens

the bees prospect,
insects with lives

beyond what the mere
gardener knows.

Liane Ellison Norman, a Madwoman in the Attic, has published two books of poetry, The Duration of Grief and Keep (www.smokeandmirrorspress.com). Mark and His Grandmother- Natural Light or Flash?

Last Saturday at the First Communion party, Mark wanted to recreate a photo he found from a little book I made him years ago.  The original was photographed in 1976!

He was sitting on his paternal Grandmother’s lap in a rocking chair in the original.

I took the pose with available light first and then with the flash.  Here are the two different versions.  I see more light his their eyes in the flash version yet am drawn to the available light.

Either way, Mark was very happy his grandmother flew in from Kansas City to help celebrate Michael’s special day.

That’s what the nice man said as he took the picture of V and me with Honorary Chair of Art For Change– Broadway singer/actor Kinky Boots Billy Porter!

He’s won a Tony award for Best Musical Actor 2013!
Mr. Porter got the crowd riled up at the beginning of the night, getting a Kinky Boots NYC package sold for ten thousand dollars. It was a fun time.

We were at the Art For Change Art Auction at the Wyndham Grand Hotel Monday Night. The proceeds benefit the PERSAD Center
I donated a photograph for the auction and bought one to bring home, too!

Mr. Billy Porter is a Pittsburgh Public Schools CAPA(Creative and Performing Arts) Alum!

Michael Joseph- First Holy Communion Day- St. Patrick Columbus OH

We woke up to pouring rain but the sun came out later in the afternoon.  St. Patrick Church- Columbus Ohio, Saturday May 10, 2014.

It was a special day for a special young man.

The family gathered in to celebrate and friends came later to share the day.
