My wish is you get to Anchorage Alaska and taste Wildflour Bakery pies. Although I am back in the lower 48 today I have some more Alaska posts.
When visiting friends in Homer Alaska, we met some very nice people in their interesting home that our host had helped build.
The first thing they did was offer us pie and coffee. Who could resist?
Three types of apple pie. As we sampled a sliver of each type, we talked about the excellent flavor and crust (one gluten- free) and then I learned about the pie creator, Wildflour Bakery Owner Olivia Allen of Anchorage. Although I took a few photos of the pie (see below) I wanted to know more.
Meet bakery owner Olivia Allen- photograph by Julia Bevins, I asked Julia if she would like to be guest blogger! What a great photo.
Then I called Olivia. She returned my call just as we were entering our departing flight but emailed me more photos and information about Wildflour Bakery. Here is her blog link Look into the World See Olivia’s watercolor illustrations and follow her on Instagram Wildflour Bakery Handcrafted pies and galettes made with foraged wild berries, organic ingredients and lots of love 🌸
Olivia writes-
Wildflour Bakery uses locally sourced and foraged wild berries, herbs, flowers and backyard honey to craft beautiful and sweet treats with creative flair.
Each pie or galette is handcrafted with the intention of highlighting the Alaskan spirit of our wild spaces, near and far.
Beautifully photographed by Julia Bevins.

Here are my pie photos so you see why I needed Olivia to send me some more.
And here is her artwork. I love the part about “serve generous slices.” Yes!!

We fairly well decimated the pies! You can see why I needed more photos to create this blog post as you look at my three photos I took at the kitchen table.
A few years ago I featured friend and pie judge Rob Bard.on National Pie Day. I know he would have enjoyed the pies.

(baked by my SIL Carolee)
This is an honest to goodness pie map !
My two friends flew in to visit me in Pittsburgh. Earlier today we visited the Frick Mansion, Clayton.
Discussing dinner options, Steve suggested Grant Bar and Lounge in Millvale.
This map shows where all the pie eating people hail from and because Kristin ordered a coconut cream pie to go, she and Linda got a pushpin to stick on the Grant Bar and Lounge Pie Lovers map- their cities are Gainesville and Boston. (We got a tapioca to go, too) and there are some pickled beets in the take away container.
Kristin and Linda are nurse midwives I met in Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1975 and Linda on right delivered my son Mark, 40 years ago this month!
A very special Pi Day. Once in a century. Tomorrow, 3.14.15 is it. Get ready!
Celebrated at school today. Spearheaded by Mrs. Mihalic. Creating some spirit!
There were numbers posted all around the hallways on the 800 level to who-knows-what place…..some cool art which I didn’t get to photograph yet.
And my neighbor across the hall…. I went in this morning and said “Hey, where’s your Pi shirt?” and then she turned around and showed me!
The librarian, wearing the machine stitched embroidery shirt her Mother, J.E., created espcially for her.
`
Mrs. Mihalic, math teacher, created a wildly spirited event, complete with Pi Day cookies she special ordered from Eat’n Park
In the cafeteria there was a game where students could win a slice of pie. (Similar to a Cake Walk)
Posting this one so you can see how you had to land on a certain number when the music stopped to win a slice of pie.

Photographed by Steve after school Friday the 13th. I’m wearing one of the shirts Mrs. Mihalic created.
A different shirt worn by one of my photography students.Everyone was getting in on the festivities.
“Where the locals meet” the sign says. The shop is closed on the weekends- open 7-3 Monday through Friday
After we got some provisions at the Piggly Wiggly grocery, my friend’s sister made a stop so I could get a couple of pies for supper. Her son Jack accompanied me as I didn’t know how to find the door on the side of the wrap around porch. I needed help carrying the boxes.
Here is Delores, who has been here for twenty years, holding the box with one of the Key Lime pies.
She sells Pecan Pies, too. And Breakfast and Lunch/ Daily Specials, too.
This is a great sign.
You can sit down and eat or order take out.
Okay, we’ll take six cinnamon buns, too!
(I am posting this with our dear friend Rob in mind . You might remember he guest blogged for National Pie Day when he was a pie judge)
Okay, I posted the donut for National Donut Day and then yesterday’s baked goods upgrade of the elegant French macarons.
Today it is the fresh baked pies. Fresh Baked Pies from Annie Oakley’s Kitchen that is!
Meet Annie the owner of Annie Oakley’s Kitchen and her sister-in-law Christa, who is a pie apprentice. They were sporting company shirts and aprons and selling delicious looking pies at the South Side Farmer’s Market on Carson Street.
I loved that they had a box of forks so you could dig right in after purchase.

And Mom, Bryna, is the ceramicist who created the pie/cake stands for the display. She also makes ceramic pie plates for sale.
What a fun booth they had set up in the Farmer’s Market on Carson Street. They are at the Whitehall Farmer’s Market on Mondays.
I sampled the apple butter which she sells on ETSY for just $4 a jar.
I bought two small strawberry rhubarb pies for $5 which was a sweet deal.
(-and good friend! Our eldest sons went to school together when stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky in 1986 -87)
Here is what Rob says:
As well as an orthodontist. Not sure how he studied for his credentials to taste pie but I know he does a great job. I think cherry is his favorite. Enough with the posts about cakes already, a main subject of my photography lately.
Laura tells me that cupcakes are soooo yesterday and that Pies are ALL THAT!
Magnolia Bakery just opening in Chicago now? She says they are late. I’m not sure because when I visit my sister in NYC I see people lined up around the block to get cupcakes on Bleecker Street at Magnolia still.
But today’s post is for Rob, a dear friend of our family, who has left comments from time to time on the blog. You might see him zipping along in a cute 2 seater British car, on his way to a pie tasting!
And the story is this. Apple pie on the left from the local grocery chain with the initials GE and the pie on the right? Patty’s Farm Market in Aspinwall on Freeport Road. That is where we got the pies for Mark and Erika’s rehearsal dinner at our house, nine years ago. Laura picked up the apple pie when we were shopping for supper ingredients. I looked at it as we put in into the back of the car and I just thought it looked uninviting. Not worth getting fat on….. so on the way home from the GE, I pulled into the Farm Market parking lot and gave her a fistful of bills and instructed her to buy a pie. And a box of fresh blueberries, too.
“What flavor?”, she asked. “ANY!” – was my response. “Whatever appeals to you.” The one on the right is Strawberry Rhubarb!. Delicious. Tart and sweet combination. Summer. So Rob, this post is for you. My favorite PIE GUY.
