Walking to the Sky: GUEST BLOG

“Walking to the Sky” by Carnegie Mellon University alumnus Jonathan Borofsky
The sculpture was inspired by stories his father used to tell him about a friendly giant who lived in the sky. A father and son in each story would ascend into the sky to talk to the giant. In this sculpture a father and son along with another onlooker can be seen observing a number of people walking up the 100’ tall pole to the sky.
Borofsky describes this work as “. . . a portrait of all of humanity rising upward from the earth to the heavens above – striving into the future with strength and determination. Ultimately, this sculpture is a symbol for our collective search for wisdom and awakened consciousness.”
Definitely worth seeing.

Tugs and Barges Passing at Dusk
Ohio River Sunday night. We were visiting our Neville Island friends again. They live on the banks of the Ohio River. We had a wonderful boat ride earlier and it was time for dinner. Two tugs and their barges appeared up river and down river. Our host pointed out the buoy that marked the channel and told us they both had to be on this side on it. How would there be enough room? As the sun was sinking we watched them approach one another, a horn blew. It was a dramatic end of the day on the river.
My Brother’s Organic Garlic From Okanogan
I was excited to receive the annual organic garlic package my brother sends. Inspirational. I think my sister helped get it out to me this year as she’s visiting now. Thanks David and Mary. Can’t wait to cook with it.

Friday Night on the North Side
Friday after he got home from work, Steve asked me to go to the Andy Warhol Museum, use our museum memberships. We always say we are going to go to one of the museums every month and although I went with the grandkids to the Carnegie Science Center twice recently and the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, he and I have not kept up with our plan. Four museums in one membership is a great deal but you have to utilize it! Tonight we were remembering going the night the Warhol opened in 1994. We had a beer and sat on the couch, a nice man offered to take our photo as he saw me struggle with a selfie attempt. We took a walk to the river after our visit.
John Kane/Robert Qualters Paintings at Carlow University Art Gallery
KANE/QUALTERS: MY PITTSBURGH Sept 5- November 10. 2017
Thursday evening Steve and I drove to Carlow University Art Gallery to see this exhibit. My friend R told me about the reception when I had breakfast with her earlier in the day. Steve and I met the artist Robert Qualters and saw his work, alongside the paintings of John Kane (1860-1934)
Mr. Qualters has donated two paintings to the University For John Kane and Big Self-Portrait. (He is on the left below)
The painting behind Mr.Qualters and gallery guest not part of the exhibition but they were chatting just outside the gallery
“MY PITTSBURGH focuses on the Pittsburgh subjects of two iconic artists, giving special emphasis to the influence that Kane’s work had on Qualters’ paintings”
There were four John Kane paintings, one Mount Mercy was donated in 2001 to the University by Mrs. Elsie Hillman. The other three were on loan from the Hillman Foundation Art Collection

PUMPKIN hat season- again
There’s been a lot of buzz about the early appearance of pumpkin spice lattes. Not too much about pumpkin hats.
People gripe about rushing the season. It’s a short window for pumpkin hats.
Plus, as babies age and turn into toddlers with their own fashion sense, they may reject sporting a pumpkin on their head!
Spoiler Alert: These two knitted pumpkin hats are for my first cousins twice removed. (Or my first cousin’s new grandson and his big sister.)

House Call
We wanted to sew a dinosaur hoodie for Charlie. The sewing machine stopped sewing on my last visit.
Googled and found Sewing Machine Repair-Columbus OH in your home.
Steve arrived in less than an hour. Fixed the broken bobbin case and bracket, added a ballpoint needle and gave my daughter and me a tutorial on what went wrong. And how to maintain it. Sews like a dream and no lugging it to a shop or waiting.
