A good friend passed early Wednesday morning. You always ask if there is anything you can do…..

She was a loving mother, a devoted sister, an excellent teacher, a strong woman, a heartfelt writer and a steadfast partner. An advocate for so many students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Inspiring thousands. A Madwoman writer at Carlow University.

I can picture her signing Go Tell it on the Mountain at a Christmas Choir Concert

Reading her poetry at Poe*Art, touching us with her words.

Playing music to motivate the scores of teachers who became students every summer in The Western Pennsylvania Writing Project at the University of Pittsburgh.

Another friend who taught with her for a couple of years remembers her playing Rocky’s Theme to get the students geared up for testing. The same friend said Cj always made lemonade when life handed her lemons. So true.

Here is another song she’d play for her students and sign with them.

The plea for help with medical expenses is now compounded by the additional need for Funeral/Memorial costs. If you’ve ever received a bill in the mail after someone has passed you’ll understand why I am getting this request out to the world. Cj was always supportive of my blog efforts and an avid follower.

A Roomful of Cellos

A roomful of cellos. A closet full of violas. Basses along the wall. And violins galore! Friday we got the tour of The Loft Violin Shop on High Street in Columbus OH by the owner himself, Mr. David Schlub. They’ve been in business for more than forty years. String quartets have played in the different rooms and then rotated after a half hour or so. Wouldn’t that be great to hear the music made by these beautiful wooden instruments?

32nd Annual Duckling Day

Saturday was the 32nd Annual Duckling Day at the Whetstone Branch of the Columbus Library.

Charlie wore his duck costume with mask on for more than an hour. The library had provided the materials to create the paper costume. There were some real ducks to watch splash in a baby pool And a parade led by some of the marching band. The NACHO band played outside the library. I forgot to mention that the 72 degree weather of yesterday dropped thirty degrees today. Brrrr 42!

The puppet show, crafts and folk music inside the library were all fun activities for the kids.

So here’s the blog post featuring Charlie while trying to omit photos of the other children. There was quite a crowd.

Thanking all of the sponsors who made the event possible. Each child received a goody bag with a book!

Lights in the Darkness

Flickering candle flames are mesmerizing. It’s hard to avert your eyes.

They cast a flattering light.

The sound of the strike of a wooden match. Tapers on a dinner table. The evening’s about to begin.

Lighting votives in the alcove of a church offers comfort when there’s really nothing else one can do.

Skinny candles on birthday cakesthe smell of wax and smoke after you make your wish, blow them out.

Everyone’s getting those battery operated, remote control, waxy but not real flame candles these days. No carbon marks on paint behind picture frames. No danger of setting the house afire.

I’ve got a set on the mantel right now. Need a load of double AAs. Make them glow again.

The wavering lights of true flames, hypnotize me.

Create shadows on the walls.

Light up a winter night.

Brothers Reed House Concert Weekend Pittsburgh PA

Early Saturday Morning, The Brothers Reed, Phil and Aaron, and their friend and cameraman Daniel hit the road for a Saturday night gig in New York City. The brothers from southern Oregon and Daniel in from L.A.

Friday night the brothers played a House Concert at my home. An enjoyable evening of great music, shared with good friends.

Their mom’s high school friend drive down a couple of hours from Erie for the concert.

I’d hosted the Brothers in May 2016, too.

Earlier in the day we drove around the city. I gave Daniel and Phil an abbreviated tour of the city. I blogged the flooded rivers yesterday. Here’s Phil by Duquesne Incline up on Mt. Washington.

Maura was in two dances The Tea Dance and The Russian Dance. A couple of the moms helped me out as Maura’s mom was with her siblings at a swim meet. Suzanne watched her while I ran to get lunch after the morning dress rehearsal and I’d left the makeup bag on the kitchen counter so Shelly added the finishing touches to Maura’s stage look.

Bloomfield Bridge Tavern Farewell

A real Pittsburgh experience. Bittersweet evening. After three decades of successful business, a favorite institution was closing and we were there for the final night. Gracious owners and hosts Steve and Lynn Frankowsi ensured we felt like adopted family.

SATURDAY night we drove over to Bloomfield, We got there early as by the end of the evening it was standing room only. We ate a Polish Platter, sipped some drafts and listened to some lively music by Ploughman’s Lunch.

We purchased our souvenir BBT t- shirts to commemorate the evening.

I took photos to document the farewell party to Bloomfield Bridge Tavern.

On the left, Mr. Stanley Frankowski, original owner of the Bloomfield Tavern . John Hayes wrote in Mr. Frankowski’s obituary “Mr. Frankowski had a soft spot for struggling artists, and the tavern became and continues to be an important entry-level venue for local rock bands. Many of Pittsburgh most popular bands, including Rusted Root and The Clarks, played at the tavern in their infancy. Years before musical concept artists Squonk Opera took their show to the Broadway stage, they took it to the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern.”

Sister-in-law Mary Jane wore the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern party Underwear to her Father-in-law’s funeral twelve years ago. She held it to the light for me to take a photo.

On thing is certain. This popular local treasure and venue is going to be missed.
