Kidney Gift of Life Gala

Tonight Steve and I were fortunate to attend the Kidney Gift of Life Gala -30th Anniversary at Heinz Field.

Pearls and Diamonds were the theme for the evening. Music was by a terrific band Protege (see video below)

Event Chairs were David J. Levenson, MD, Debra Caplan, MPA,and Beth M. Piraino, MD.

Many others volunteer and committees put in long hours of work to make the Gala evening such a wonderful success.

You might be familiar with his voice-Emcee- Jeff Hathhorn of KDKA 1020 Radio did a great job.

The Executive Director of the National Kidney Foundation Serving the Alleghenies, Erin L. Tuladzieck made opening remarks and then the Board Chair, Tom Ali thanked the members of the board and had them stand for a round of applause.

The Danka family spoke of their journey with kidney disease and multiple kidney transplants for three of them.

We learned a lot about kidney disease, kidney research and kidney transplantation and the need for increased funding. Also, the importance of increased awareness became clear as we heard the statistics. One in seven people will be affected by kidney disease. Millions of people already deal with it and many more people are walking around and don’t even know that they have kidney disease. Yet!

March is National Kidney Month.

We watched the screens as the ten minutes challenge to reach a goal of ten thousand dollars netted more than twenty thousand dollars in donations. They’ll be matched dollar for dollar. Very exciting to watch the temperature rise and go over. Wow!

When you scroll down you can see the photograph I donated to the event’s silent auction.

Lights in the Darkness

Flickering candle flames are mesmerizing. It’s hard to avert your eyes.

They cast a flattering light.

The sound of the strike of a wooden match. Tapers on a dinner table. The evening’s about to begin.

Lighting votives in the alcove of a church offers comfort when there’s really nothing else one can do.

Skinny candles on birthday cakesthe smell of wax and smoke after you make your wish, blow them out.

Everyone’s getting those battery operated, remote control, waxy but not real flame candles these days. No carbon marks on paint behind picture frames. No danger of setting the house afire.

I’ve got a set on the mantel right now. Need a load of double AAs. Make them glow again.

The wavering lights of true flames, hypnotize me.

Create shadows on the walls.

Light up a winter night.

Charlie and the Jack-in-the-Box

Jen H. Challenges bloggers to tell a story visually. Here’s a seven photo series telling the story of Charlie learning to manage the springy Curious George monkey- in-the-box. My favorite the last picture. I wonder what he was saying to the monkey.

Wordless Wednesday

Night Walk in Bloomfield

Infinity, Lost

Infinity, lost.

An infinity scarf. No beginning. No end. Have you knit one?

Found in Pittsburgh’s Strip District on top of a recycle can, as I parked Friday morning.

Penn Avenue.

Headed for La Prima Espresso for a delicious start to the day.

I didn’t touch it to determine if it was hand knit or determine fiber content but I felt sad when I saw it. The snow flakes caught on the stitches.

Did you ever do something really stupid?

Did you ever do something really stupid? Like so stupid you can’t even believe it?

Dumb dumb dumb!

This afternoon I took my warm flannel sheets out of the dryer to change my bed. Stuck with static to the fabric was one of my brand new hand knit socks. Yikes! My eyes hit wide and I couldn’t believe it. I found the mate.

The socks knit from special locally dyed yarn from the Sonoran Desert in Arizona.

They’d been hanging on a towel rack to dry after being lovingly hand washed with a mild soap, carefully rinsed and rolled in a towel to get rid of excess water.

I’d just completed the pair before midnight on Wednesday, wanting to finish in the month of February.

I’d knit them over the course of two months time. Yikes. And I’d bought the yarn two years ago when visiting a friend in Arizona.

Another friend in Pittsburgh was knitting the same pattern with almost the same yarn I’d gotten her. We cast on at the beginning of January. Our own little KAL.(knit along) The four row pattern repeat took me longer than usual to finish the pair. Not my usual mindless knitting. I was so happy they were finished.

How stupid I’d washed and dried these handmade socks in the washing machine and even worse, the DRYER!

I looked at them on top of the dryer and they weren’t exactly toddler sized. Phew!

How did I get so lucky?

and believe it or not, they fit perfectly

Cheryl Griset is the artist who dyed the yarn with plants from the Sonoran Desert. If you’ve followed previous knitting posts, you know I like to buy a skein of souvenir sock yarn when traveling. (Sometimes more than one skein!)
