Jean Marc Chatellier – Almond brioche
One glorious sunrise St.George Island –
July 2016
He was headed to Enrico’s Biscotti Company. I was headed to Ohio.
Wait, may I take your photo? I wanted to get out the real camera, not the phone.
I was parked just in front of his truck
He was so nice. His name’s Matt. He baked these down on 31st Street and was bringing them to Enrico’s Biscotti. If you saw the movie The Bread My Sweet/ A Wedding for Bella, you’ve been inside bakery.
And this is the part you are never going to believe.
I watched that very movie (renamed A Wedding for Bella) not twelve hours before I ran into Matt taking the croissants to the same bakery in the film. If you click on the title above you can read Roger Ebert’s review. All filmed in Pittsburgh, right in the Strip District.

Matt and his Freshly Baked Croissants.
You can see the sign for Enrico’s on Penn Avenue in this shot as I got into my car.
Maybe you read Mark Bittman’s farewell article A Slice of Heaven in Pittsburgh (in the NYTimes) about the Pittsburgh bakery- Bread and Salt.
My neighbor and I went over to Bloomfield and got in line to order our lunch. We took it to go.
Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday you need to plan ahead.
You can order via email. If you ordered bread or pizza online you don’t have to wait in the line. Just go ahead to the counter, pay and pick up.
Samples of bread are in bowls on the counter. Here are a couple of loaves. They are sold by the pound so you can get exactly what you need, you don’t have to buy the whole loaf.
Here is Laura on her first day of work. She was gracious to let me photograph her.
That’s a ricotta/almond cake. They weigh the bread and pizza. It was Laura’s (smiling on right) first day

We sampled all four types offered on Friday.

We had a nice lunch back at my neighbor’s.
Lots of fresh veggie toppings.
The one on the right is the Rosa pizza with oregano.
The classic Margherita was my favorite. The combination of basil, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes so fragrant and delicious. Next time I plan to try the bread.

Writer Hal Klein has an article in Pittsburgh Magazine describing the breads, the baker Rick Easton and the bakery
If you plan to go, be sure to click the Bread and Salt link to check on hours of operation.

Everyone who knows me and what’s in Millvale PA, was pretty sure I was at Jean-Marc Chatellier Bakery when they saw yesterday’s post of the snow topped mailboxes.
Not this trip- although I wish I’d thought of when I was over there.
Right after school I drove in the snow and met my wonderful printer, Tom, to pick up a print. Tom was waiting on the side of street on 31st between Liberty and Penn, right before the 31st Street bridge.
His good idea so I could get to Millvale before closing.
I was dropping off a print to be framed at my favorite framer, Mark Panza Gallery. He and his daughter Jennifer do an excellent job. I always leave there with a rejuvenation in spirit and lots of creative ideas after we talk.
Mark took this photo me with my new SONY mirrorless camera, testing it out.
I love the vintage mannequins in the background as they are waitng for pick-up to be in a movie being filmed in Millvale and Pittsburgh.
Thanks for taking this photo of me Mark.
and here is our selfie usie taken with the tilt screen option that opens up.
I made it a tad smaller so I don’t feel so bulky when I look at it.
I cropped myself out and got a nice portrait of Mark
Steve brought in take out tonight. Fish sandwich and slaw. I reheated the sandwich in the oven. Mmmmmm.
Brother Michael’s photograph is on the wall at Rocco’s Pasticceria down on Bleecker Street.
Brother Michael LaMantia served “51 years as a brother in the Scalabrini Order and nearly 40 years at the parish in the heart of Greenwich Village.”
(Our Lady of Pompeii Church is across the street from Rocco’s. My sister says there is a memorial to Brother Michael in the church.
Before Brother Michael passed in 2013, he gave the Pasticceria this statue of Saint Rocco. Brother Michael is Gone, But Not Forgotten.
Thanks to Krista Evans for this challenge
Rocco’s on Bleecker Street.
For the story of Saint Rocco you can check out the link in this post from the Saint Rocco Festival in Pittsburgh
Franco (posing for me with a cheesecake below) is the one who showed me Brother Michael’s prayer card on the wall at Rocco’s and told me that Brother Michael had given the Saint Rocco Statue to the store. Franco has been at Rocco’s for more than thirty years!
Here is Franco posing for me with a cheesecake. Mary and I stopped in Saturday night for a coffee and pastry after a nice day at Galleries and Target First Night at the Brooklyn Museum.
Millvale, PA is just across the Allegheny River. Steve and I eat out at Grant Bar Grant Avenue some nights.
If you follow the blog you’ve been to Millvale with me, Jean-Marc Chatellier’s Bakery for Brioche, Esther’s Hobby Shop, Attic Records, the high water mark from the floods.
We popped into the Panza Gallery and saw some friends and acquaintances and checked out the new work show by Brian Lang and Susan Sparks. I’ve posted some photos of Panza’s.
While chatting with Mary Ann, I asked if I could photograph the ceramic holy water font where this package of fuses got placed. Just as it was.
When Mark was finished with his conversation, he concurred that I could photograph this find. Thanks Mark and Mary Ann.
Coming up in February and March, Panza will host programs on the artist Maxo Vanka Murals housed in the St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Parish on the hill.
Down by the Ohio River.
An eclectic gallery. The back of a big stop sign.
The Byzantine Church from McKees Rocks Bottoms, too, where the bells were ringing Sunday.
A stop at La Gourmandine Bakery on Butler Street for a brioche.
A little camper for a weekend getaway
Good thing they have an alarm system
Hey, the place has AC

Church Bells were ringing in the tower
A home filled with disappointment Sunday afternoon. I wonder if they have to water the shakers.
and a line out the front door, everyone getting their French baked goods on Butler Street in Lawrenceville
Stopped at the Car Wash on the way home
I need to gather up my knitting bag, the computer bag and the camera bag- pack the suitcase- load the car. And the grocery bag with the sock monkeys that the girls helped me stuff but still need to be handstitched. The eyes embroidered. The tails attached.
I’ll be heading home in a few hours. A 3 1/2 hour drive. Just can’t sleep.
The Summer unstructured time has been grand.
Although I’m up at four today, setting the alarm for 5:15 is going to be the tricky part. Getting up tomorrow for the familiar drive to school. The freshman will come on Friday so that gives me a couple of days of clerical time and Prof Dev meetings. All students start on Monday.
Here’s the pastry case and breakfast from Sunday’s brunch at La Chatelaine after church.
